The table below shows how the size and distance from the sun of other planets compare with these dimensions for Earth.
How the other planets compare with Earth:
Average distance
Diameter at Equator from the sun
Planet (Earth = 1 unit) (Earth = 1 unit)
Mercury 0.38 0.39
Venus 0.95 0.72
Earth 1.00 1.00
Mars 0.53 1.52
Jupiter 11.2 5.19
Saturn 9.41 9.43
Uranus 3.98 19.1
Pluto 0.24 39.3
Follow the instructions below to produce two scale drawings of the solar system. The first drawing will show how the sizes of the planets compare with each other. The second drawing will show how far the planets are from the sun.
(a) On a sheet of A3 paper, draw a circle to represent the size of each of the nine planets. Use the diameter in Earth units from the table above and a scale of 1 cm = 1 Earth unit. Colour and label each planet.
(b) Turn the sheet over and rule a 40 cm line. At one end of the line, draw a rotate, as they orbit the sun. large dot and label it as the sun. Use the distances in Earth units from the table to draw a dot representing each planet on your line. Again, use a scale of 1 cm = 1 Earth unit. Label each planet.
Answer these questions in full sentences:
Which planet is closest in size to the Earth?
Do the planets appear to fall into groupings, either in size or in distance from the sun?
Why is it not possible to represent both the size and the distance from the sun on the same diagram?
The Solar System Research Assignment
TASK 1
Prepare a planetary facts sheet. The facts should be organised in a table listing the following information about the planets: i) mass of planet; ii) their diameter; iii) the distance from the sun; iv) the number of moons; v) the surface temperature; vi) length of day; vii) length of year; viii) the composition of the atmosphere; ix) gravitational force; x) other interesting information
Using your complete planetary facts sheet, complete the remaining tasks.
TASK 2
Answer the following questions:
1.Which is the largest planet?
2.Which is the smallest planet?
3.Which two planets are closest to Earth?
4.Which planets have moons?
5.Which planets have rings?
6.Which planet has: (a) the longest day?; (b) the shortest day?; (c) the longest year?; (d) the shortest year?
TASK 3
Create two graphs:
i) a bar graph to show the planets in order on the horizontal axis and the diameter of the planets on the vertical axis
ii) a line graph to link the diameter of the planets (horizontal axis) and the number of moons around each planet (vertical axis) Use the graphs to answer the following questions:
i) write a generalisation linking the diameters of the planets with their distances from the Sun
ii) write a generalisation linking the diameter of the planet with the number of moons
TASK 4
Compare the length of day with the length of year for each planet in the solar system. What pattern can you see in the lengths of the years of the planets as you move away from the Sun?
TASK 5
Compare the the gravitational force and the mass for each planet in the solar system. Write a generalisation about the mass of the planet and the gravity on its surface. On which planet would your weight be less than on Earth?
